The ULSO Standard Wedge is a precisely engineered accessory designed to facilitate angle beam phased-array ultrasonic inspections. Specifically intended for use with Type A5 interface phased-array probes, this wedge is configured for Normal Scan applications, where the probe is positioned for linear movement along the length of the wedge to generate a sweeping ultrasonic beam.
A key performance characteristic of this wedge is its ability to produce a 55° refracted angle within a steel test material. This refracted beam propagates as a Shear Wave (S), a mode of ultrasonic wave particularly effective for detecting discontinuities that are oriented at or near a perpendicular angle to the direction of sound propagation, such as cracks and incomplete fusion in welds.
This particular wedge incorporates the valuable IHC option, a designation that signifies three important integrated features:
Irrigation (I): The wedge is equipped with internal channels or external ports designed to deliver ultrasonic couplant, typically water, directly to the critical interfaces between the probe and the wedge, and between the wedge and the surface of the material being inspected. This integrated irrigation system ensures consistent and optimal acoustic coupling, which is essential for reliable ultrasonic transmission and reception, especially during extended scans or when using automated scanning systems.
Holes (H): The wedge includes strategically placed mounting holes. These holes are designed to allow for secure and stable attachment of the wedge and the associated probe to various manual or automated ultrasonic scanners and indexing fixtures. This feature enables repeatable and controlled scanning patterns, improving the efficiency and accuracy of inspections.
Carbides (C): The contact surface of the wedge, which slides against the material being inspected, is enhanced with embedded carbide wear pins or a layer of carbide material. Carbide is an exceptionally hard and abrasion-resistant substance. The inclusion of carbides significantly increases the durability and lifespan of the wedge, particularly when used on rough, scaled, or abrasive surfaces. This ensures consistent performance and reduces the need for frequent wedge replacement.
