Overview

Met-L-Chek VP-30 is a visible dye liquid penetrant designed for detecting surface-breaking discontinuities in suitable clean, nonporous materials. Its red visible indication system allows inspection under appropriate white-light conditions without requiring UV-A illumination.

VP-30 supports both Method A water-washable and Method C solvent-removable penetrant testing procedures. During inspection, the penetrant enters cracks, laps, seams, porosity, and other surface-open discontinuities through capillary action. After excess penetrant is removed and a compatible developer is applied, penetrant retained inside discontinuities bleeds back to the surface and creates clearly visible indications.

The 55-gallon bulk drum configuration is suitable for high-volume inspection departments, production penetrant lines, large fabrication facilities, maintenance operations, and other environments where frequent or continuous penetrant testing is performed.

Application Guidelines

Surface Preparation

• Remove paint, scale, rust, grease, oil, and other contamination as required

• Clean the inspection area thoroughly

• Allow the surface to dry completely

• Ensure discontinuities are open to the surface before applying penetrant

Penetrant Application

VP-30 may be applied using an approved method such as:

• Immersion

• Spray

• Brushing

• Flow-on application

• Controlled bulk dispensing

Apply enough penetrant to completely wet the inspection area and allow the specified dwell time.

Method A — Water-Washable Removal

For Method A applications:

• Complete the specified penetrant dwell time

• Remove excess penetrant using controlled water washing

• Maintain water pressure and temperature according to the written procedure

• Avoid excessive washing

• Ensure penetrant is not removed from discontinuities

• Dry the component as required before developer application

Overwashing can reduce indication sensitivity.

Method C — Solvent-Removable Procedure

For Method C applications:

• Complete the required penetrant dwell time

• Remove initial excess penetrant using a clean, dry, lint-free cloth

• Apply an approved remover to a separate cloth

• Gently wipe the surface until excessive background penetrant is removed

• Avoid directly flooding the inspection surface

• Do not overclean

• Allow the surface to dry before applying developer

Developer Application

After excess penetrant removal:

• Ensure the surface is properly prepared and dry

• Apply a compatible developer

• Use a thin, uniform developer coating

• Allow the required development time

• Inspect the surface under appropriate white light

• Evaluate and document relevant indications

A white developer is typically used to provide strong contrast against the red visible penetrant.

Bulk Handling and Storage
