The MIL-STD-271F Magnetic Particle Test Plate from PH Tool is a specifically designed reference standard used to verify the effectiveness and sensitivity of the magnetic particle inspection (MPI) process. This test plate is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of MIL-STD-271F (SHIPS), paragraph 4.3.1.2, and also meets the requirements of newer NAVSEA Technical Publication T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, paragraph 4.3.1.2.
This essential tool contains two precisely machined EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) notches of defined dimensions: 0.020 inches deep x 0.006 inches wide x 0.063 inches long. These artificial flaws are strategically oriented on the plate – one notch is parallel to the intended weld direction, and the other is perpendicular.
To prevent mechanical holding of the magnetic particles and ensure that indications are solely due to magnetic leakage fields, the notches are filled flush with a non-conducting material, typically epoxy.
The test plate itself is constructed from 3/8 inch thick low alloy steel, with overall dimensions of approximately 6 inches wide x 12 inches long.
