Why AC? — Surface Flaw Detection Explained
The YokeLite operates on alternating current (AC) — the preferred waveform for detecting surface-breaking discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. The AC waveform creates a dynamic, pulsating magnetic field that agitates fluorescent or visible magnetic particles, improving their mobility and migration toward surface indications — resulting in sharper, more clearly defined indications compared to DC or half-wave DC fields.
AC yokes are the industry standard for detection of the following surface and near-surface defect types:

How to Use the YokeLite
- Connect the detachable power cord to the yoke and plug into a 230V power supply
- Position yoke legs at right angles to the direction of suspected discontinuities — adjust leg span as needed for best surface contact
- Depress the trigger to energize the yoke and apply magnetic particles to the area between the legs
- While energized, blow off excess dry powder or evaluate the wet particle bath to reveal indications
- Evaluate indications for size, shape, and location against applicable acceptance criteria
- Reposition yoke legs at 90° to the previous position and repeat to detect indications in all orientations
- Demagnetize by slowly withdrawing the energized yoke from the surface to a distance of at least 18 inches / 45 cm
